Good morning, Whatbirders! The random number generator spit out an East Coast species this morning, so I'm pairing with a western one!

Laughing Gull

California Gull

The guideline is only one photo per species per week, please. On those occasions when I name more than one species, you're welcome ...

Re: Photo Species of the Week

My former backyard in Lexington County, central SC. August 2019.

A blurry shot out the kitchen window. There were a couple of spots where the birds would dust-bath but this wasn't one of them; the pine straw is an even mat. There also weren't any ant mounds in the area. I think the bird was just ...

Perhaps some photos of them in there more normal setting would help the id .

No, I'd never seen one on the wing or from below. My handful of sightings are all of birds on the ground, and only once at less than 75 yards.

It's been cold here, but not unseasonably so. High 20s to low 30s at night, up to about 70 during the day. All normal for this time of year.

Speaking of frozen bird baths, I finally deployed the bird bath heater I have never previously used since I bought it several years ago. It did a fine job ...

I birded from the deck this afternoon, outside for the first time since the 8" snowfall on the first of the month. Still a bit chilly at 45F but better than wind chills below 30. One interesting thing about getting out on the deck as opposed to birding from inside the sunroom: did you the birds make ...

The next day there were 13, and a Fish & Wildlife man was taking ...
