Terrible Photos
Thought this might be a fun game for us to play. Whoever guesses the species depicted correctly posts the next photo, or defers to another player. Please only guess again after two others have guessed, feedback by poster has been given, or once a day has gone by. Whoever has posted a photo should ...

Re: eBird Quiz of the Week
I got 13 out of 20
2 wrong due to multiple species, 1 wrong because I forgot to check the location the photo was taken (was from Ecuador), 2 because I was unfamiliar with the subspecies and got confused, and 2 I just got wrong.

Re: Your checklist of the day
Chased a White-winged Scoter that I needed for the year, and found a bonus Long-tailed Duck! 7 Red-throated Loons and a Common Merganser were nice too. https://ebird.org/checklist/S299213110
What's the status of Red-throated Loon in Tennessee? I know in California they are quite rare away ...

Re: Scaups
Head shape looks good superficially, though I’d still want to watch the bird move around in the field. Don’t know how it’s been in the plains, but we’ve had huge influx of GRSC in Tennessee the past week

Re: Scaups
Outer birds are both Greater, middle bird is tough. Nail looks solid for Greater, though on molting birds I don’t entirely trust it, but I can’t judge head shape and eye placement in that photo

Re: Scaups
The female/immature Scaups you posted look good for Greater. A few males and a female in the first photos posted, last photo is a Lesser to me.

Re: Red-tailed Hawk
It being an immature complicated things a little bit, but if I saw that bird I’d immediately by thinking abieticola. Heavy belly streaking, as well as heavily marked underwings. I’d submit it as a northern and see what the reviewer thinks, but I feel good about that bird as a northern.

Re: Help with a gull
Pretty sure it's a Herring
Can Iceland (Thayer's) be discounted?
Here’s my take, and I could be totally off base.
The bird is in its second cycle (replaced mantle feathers while retaining immature body feathers), which explains the lack of adult primaries, and in comparing Thayer’s and Am ...

Re: Year Lists/General Discussion 2026
Tennessee is currently being invaded by northerners! The relentless back-to-back arctic blasts, coupled with a devastating ice storm has pushed hundred of Common Mergansers across the region, as well as dozens of American Tree Sparrows, Tundra Swans, and massive influx of Canvasback and Greater ...
