Woodpeckers in the NYT today.

Probably not quite what is intended for this thread but an interesting article with some nice photos.

Re: Photo Species of the Week

My favorite flycatcher. Not my best photo but a bird that I used to see daily when walking my dog - taken in 2016, long before I got more interested in birding, with my trusty Nikon D7200.

Another vote for abieticola - not quite as distinctly marked as the ones I usually see but dense belly band getting wider at the flanks, dark patagials, dark head and throat with some dribbling.
Only a dozen or so reports in my Ontario county but tagged as rare so almost certainly very under ...

Re: Lost Whatbirders

I just checked again and the WhatBird forums are appearing as active but not working because of errors. I do think that it might be (probably is?) possible to recover the information but in all honesty I wouldn't hold my breath. The site owner has considered shutting down the forums repeatedly ...

I was hoping others might chime in on this thread.
I think the last photo is a Lesser or a /, the previous two look good for Greater (at least to me, although the more experience I get the less confidence with some birds - still convinced they hybridize).

Great to see that AveryF is back, bringing membership to 29 (although I notice that some of the posts get more than 400 views).

Does anyone know if all the data from Whatbird is completely lost? I'm not looking for anything specific, just wondering what happens when sites are discontinued as I ...

Went from a daytime high of -3C (27F) yesterday to -15C (5F) today and back up to a forecasted -1C (30F) on Tuesday.

Appear to be lots of Pine Grosbeaks and Snow Buntings, a few Lapland Longspurs and very few Snowy Owls in the county.

'Listers" - the movie. Two brothers, novice birders, live in their van for a year doing a big year.

I suspect most birders have seen this by now, it's at 2.9M views and has generated a lot of buzz.

Scientists just mapped the family tree of all 11,000 bird species—and you can explore it https://share.google/kH197VMrWju4PiCZx

Snowing again so added a few more - the second last one has a drake plumaged hen, a Mallard x Black Duck hybrid (MBDH) and a hen.
The first three were about 2.5MB each and reached the post limit so I will use smaller files in future.

Re: Bird behavior

Every morning I have my breakfast on my roof terrace and do an e-Bird list. I have noticed that every day a group of about 6 or 8 all-white pigeons/doves fly up as a group and take off in a specific direction, the same every day. I've been counting them as Rock Doves because of the behavior ...

A really tough choice (we may need the Overload thread) so I went with one to reflect current weather conditions (much milder today at -15C or 5f).

Excluding UK and Canada as home territory this is a November 2009 (pre-birding) photo from a visit to Huntington Beach SP, SC. I think there is Wood Stork, White Ibis, Snowy Egret and D-c Cormorant. Not sure about the one on far right.
