Birding and activity book for NC

Post by GracesWarbler »

Hi folks. I moved back to North Carolina last year and want to make an activity book about the 50 most common birds here. The book will be aimed at beginning birders. What sorts of things would be most useful/fun for young birders? Any particular tips or advice that people should know?

I'm planning to have an color-able illustration of each species (which is partly an activity for me: to photograph each of the 50 most common species, then make illustrations). I'll also have some word searches and crosswords for rainy days, along with some tips. I'm using eBird data to identify the 50 most common species here, and I'll have bar charts of sighting frequency.

If you were/are a young birder, what would you like to find in a book like this? It will be a larger-format book for home, not a field guide.

A short bio of each bird would be good - likely habitat, food preferences, favorite nesting sites, behavior clues etc. Maybe 1-4 sentences.
